The UK's largest architecture practices were recognised and rewarded at the annual Architect's Journal's exclusive AJ100 Members' Dinner and Awards ceremony on 22 May at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London. My pictures helped Child Graddon Lewis bolster its numbers to appear in the AJ100 for the first time in it's 21-year history, while also making the shortlist for New Member of the Year. I have worked with CGL for 7 years now, photographing projects from the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington to the featured "David's Bridal" retail outlet in Westfield, Stratford. On every project, large or small, CGL's approach is knowledge and design led creating spaces that are shaped by their client's aspirations and responsive to the surrounding environment.
It always feels good to be involved in award winning projects. I photographed the BBC Broadcasting House for Overbury and HOK. I remember walking around the space on my first visit in awe of the scale and technical requirements. From the incredible news floor to the numerous studios, and from the largest comms room I have ever seen to the inspiring office layouts, meeting rooms and infrastructure, everything is on epic proportions. It is no wonder that it recently received the British Council for Offices (BCO) Award for corporate workplace in the combined merits of its base build and fit out. According to the BCO, Portland Place was “a development of extraordinary complexity on numerous fronts that has been delivered with great skill, passion and style” .
This project was also nominated for the National Innovation award based on the development of completely new ways of working and broadcasting, in addition to numerous technical innovations in acoustics, vibration, visual aspects and space planning.
