  • By Jonathan Banks

The Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) is an international photography competition, founded in 2011 under the patronage of crown prince of Dubai sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum. This year, the main theme of the HIPA contest is HUMANITY.

HIPA

The first stage of judging is complete and my submission in the HUMANITY Category has qualified to the second stage.

I also have a second picture through in the ARCHITECTURAL Photography – A Cultural / Iconic Building category.

Good luck to all my fellow photographers that have also been shortlisted.

“Photo of the Week” – Rangefinder

  • By Jonathan Banks

I was featured in Rangefinder Magazine last month for a portrait that I photographed in Liberia. On learning how diverse I was as a photographer, working for corporate clients, editorial publications, charities & much more, they wanted to see something completely different.

My photo “Steeling a kiss” of Peter & Kate is featured in Rangefinder Magazine as “Photo of the Week”. I stepped in to cover Peter & Kate’s wedding for a fellow photographer who had an assignment abroad.

We had spoken about the sort of pictures they wanted and left me to photograph the wedding as it unfolded. I asked to be in the car with them between St. Mary’s Leigh Church and Penhurst place. I adjusted the mirror in the front (asking the driver first) and as I was facing forward Kate and Peter quickly forgot I was there. After adjusting the flash head to point back into the car, they suddenly kissed.

The moment feels special because it was spontaneous with Peter and Kate oblivious to me as the photographer.

Rangefinder is an award-winning brand for professional photographers that first launched as a magazine in the early 1950s.
