The First Light Pavilion at Jodrell Bank has been selected from over 250 entrants as one of the successful National/International projects at the 2023 Civic Trust Awards. The cultural centre was created to tell the inspirational stories of Jodrell Bank’s world-leading contribution to science, heritage, and culture.
The First Light Pavilion was designed by Hassell Studios and engineered by Atelier One with the executive architects of JM Architect’s overlooking the entire project and Kier Construction building the large concrete dome.
I was commissioned to photograph the new First Light Pavilion, to capture its stunning architecture and clever design.
The design is based on a modern re-working of the Meridian Line. It features a curved entrance that mirrors the arc of the sun with exposed concrete visible inside the building, as well as on the front façade. Armourcoat supplied an insulated render that that reflects 20% more radiant heat and optimises the thermal performance of the building.
The Civic Trust Awards is the longest standing built environment awards scheme in Europe. It was established to recognise the very best in architecture and environmental design, to improve the built environment for us all through design, sustainability, inclusiveness, and accessibility. It also rewards projects that offer a positive cultural, social, economic, or environmental benefit to their local communities.
